Alipay launches new service in HK, Macau

ALIPAY, the online payment unit of Alibaba Group, said today it has launched a convenient payment service to allow people in Hong Kong and Macau to shop more conveniently as it steps up efforts to attract more overseas users.

Bank of China credit card holders in Hong Kong and Macau will be able to shop at Taobao Marketplace and Tmall with a verification code sent to their cell phones as well as the credit cards' card number and validity date, saving them the trouble of opening an online payment service at bank outlets.

Alipay has been expanding into cross border payment service and at the end of April it teamed up with eight overseas airlines such as Dragon Air and Royal Dutch Airlines to allow overseas travelers to book and pay for flight tickets.

Other third-party payment firms like 99Bill and China PnR Co have been actively expanding their business to new sectors including online education, insurance and cross-border payment.

China's third-party payment market grew 91 percent to 758 billion yuan (US$120 billion) in the first quarter this year, according to a report by Analysys International.
