Aliyun gets spending lift
ALIBABA Group will invest US$200 million to further develop its Aliyun mobile phone operating system to keep up with rivals in the mobile Internet sector.
The e-commerce firm launched its Aliyun OS in June last year and the investment signals the group's long-term strategy to focus on the wireless and mobile-related business.
Alibaba has set up an independent division which will develop its mobile operations. It expects the number of smartphone makers using its OS to increase to five by the end of this year from two now.
Other domestic Internet companies are also working on their own operating systems for smartphones and collaborating with handset makers to tap rising consumer demand for the devices.
