Ambitious Alipay service for cell users

ALIPAY is emerging out from its virtual world and taking on the banks and mobile operators by launching a service that allows users to make payments at convenient stores and other offline vendors with their smartphones.

The move reflects the ambition of Alipay, which is owned by Alibaba Group Chairman Jack Ma and already holds a dominant 46 percent of online payment market.

Vendors will have to scan the buyer's unique barcode and enter the amount of the purchase being made. It will be reflected on the user's mobile application and the transaction can be completed by clicking on the link on the smartphone. Retailers will need an Internet-connected computer and an Alipay account.

Users' mobile phone will need Internet access and the service is currently available on handsets using operating systems of Apple's iOS, Google's Android and Nokia's Symbian.

Vendors will not pay any commission for monthly transaction volume under 20,000 yuan (US$3,077).
