Android phones are a ringing success

THE falling prices of Google-developed Android phones have enabled them to dominate the domestic smartphone market with a nearly 77 percent share and beating Nokia's Symbian system, a Beijing-based research firm said yesterday.

The average price of Android devices made by makers, including Motorola, HTC and Samsung, was l,670 yuan (US$265) by the end of first quarter, down from 2,300 yuan a year ago, Analysys International said in a statement.

By the end of the first quarter, Android's share of the smartphone market rose from 33.6 percent to 76.7 percent, followed by Nokia's Symbian which fell to 11.8 percent from 42.5 percent and Apple's iOS at 7 percent, Analysys disclosed.

"Thanks to Android's open source which attracts many manufacturers and 3G, the market share of Android-run smartphones will keep rising," Analysys said.

The falling prices of the Android devices will certainly increase their popularity, according to industry insiders. At present, the average price of an Android device is only one-third of Apple's cheapest iPhone sold on Chinese mainland.

Android phones costing less than 800 yuan have a big potential in the domestic market, thanks to surging demand from telecommunications carriers and consumers.

Meanwhile, Nokia has adopted a new Windows Phone system to replace Symbian to power its new phones.
