Apple Inc starts trade-in service

APPLE Inc has kicked off a trade-in service for iPhones and iPads in China to boost sales in its second-biggest regional market, Shanghai Daily learned today.

Consumers are able to take old iPhones to Apple retail stores in China, who will get discounts for new iPhone and iPad purchases. The detailed discounts are decided by “Specialists”, the on-site Apple store employees, Apple said on its Chinese website.

The trade-in service is only available in Apple’s directly-operated retail stores, including stores in Huaihai Road and Lujiazui in Shanghai.

Foxconn Technology Group, Apple’s contract maker for iPhone and iPad will buy and re-sell the phones as part of the program, media reported citing unidentified sources.

The service is not attractive as it only offers a discount of 10 percent or about 500 yuan (for an iPhone 4S) , which is less than 10 percent cost a cheapest iPhone 6, according to netizens who have asked Apple’s “Specialists” today.

In Taobao.com, China’s biggest online auction website, an used iPhone can sell about 2,000 to 3,000 yuan.

Apple China is not available to make comments on the issue today.

Apple expected that China would overtake the US as Apple’s current biggest market. The company plans to double the number of stores in China by the middle of next year, opening new stores in Hangzhou and Chongqing, according to Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive.
