Apple chief Tim Cook draws huge fans on his first Weibo posting
APPLE Inc Chief Executive Tim Cook drew 280,000 Chinese fans within the first three hours after he opened an account this afternoon on Weibo, China's Twitter-like social platform.
His apparent popularity highlights Apple's growing influence in China, the world's biggest mobile phone market thanks to star gadgets like iPhone 6, Macbook and Apple Watch.
"Hello, China! Happy to be back in Beijing, announcing innovative new environmental programs," Cook’s first posting, at 3 pm, said. It was written in both English and Chinese.
The posting drew more than 30,000 "likes" and 30,000 "comments," and brought Cook over 280,000 followers on Weibo by 6 pm today.
The environmental program reference relates to Apple's cooperation with the World Wildlife Fund on a project called Responsibility Managed Forecast, which aims to expand the scope of recycling energy and reducing carbon dioxide.
The multi-year project aims to make the supply of pulp, paper and wood products more sustainable and is part of an expansion of the company's renewable energy and environmental protection initiatives in China, according to an Apple statement.
Apple also intends to expand renewable energy projects to manufacturing facilities in China, following a 40-megawatt solar power project announced last month, its first solar power project outside the United States.
Cook has 1.1 million Twitter followers since his first Twitter post in September 2013 that described the experiences of visiting an Apple Store in the United States. Twitter doesn’t operate on the Chinese mainland.
In the first quarter, Apple's iPhone sales in China jumped 62.1 percent and took a 14.7 percent market share, ranking No. 1 in the mainland smartphone market. In second place was rival Xiaomi, with a 13.7 percent share,, International Data Corp, a US-based IT research firm, said today.
