Apple expands mainland sales with new online store

APPLE Inc launched an online store in China today to sell iPhone, iPad and iPod products via the Internet. This is the latest move of the US-based firm to penetrate into China after opening three Apple Stores in the mainland this year.
Apple also launched a Chinese-language App Store for its customers to download localized applications, a move to tap into the world's biggest handset market.
It's the right time for Apple to expand sales channels into cyber world because of the coming holiday season and huge demand of iPad and non-contract iPhone 4, which debuted in China in September, industry insiders said.
Apple provides free delivery and some customized services for its new online store. Prior to this move, iPhone 4 buyers had to order the devices on Apple's Website and pick them up at one of Apple's four stores in Beijing and Shanghai. The huge demand for iPhone 4 often made the online order difficult to finish.
Apple's online store warns customers outside major cities that their deliveries may take one to two extra work days and says it accepts credit cards and debit cards, as well as bank transfers and cash deposits.
According to the new Chinese online store, the delivery of iPhone 4 will take one to two weeks while delivery of iPads and iPods one to three working days.
The Chinese App Store, an online marketplace where customers can purchase software and game applications, requires users to have dual-currency credit cards when making purchases online.
The App Store offers customers access to the world's largest catalog of apps -- over 300,000 apps in 20 categories including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel.
Chinese carriers such as China Mobile and rivals like Nokia Corp, Motorola Inc and BlackBerry have all launched mobile application stores.
