Apple on engineer hiring spree in China
Apple Inc is hiring “several hundred engineers” in China with plans to establish teams in Shanghai and Taipei as it gears up to unveil new products like the next-generation iPhone and iPad, media reported yesterday.
Apple is increasing its staff number in China from the current 600 in a bid to also strengthen its supply chain in the country, which is the biggest manufacturing plant for the United States-based tech giant, industry insiders said.
The hiring push reflects Apple’s need for more engineers to work with Asian suppliers on developing components for upcoming iPhones and iPads as it plans for faster and more frequent product launches, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal yesterday.
Apple has been luring staff away from companies including HTC, the report said.
Apple was not available for comments yesterday. But it has published online adverts for job openings in hardware, software, design and marketing based in Shanghai, some posted just yesterday.
Apple is also looking to increase the “number of its supply-chain managers in the wake of criticism over factory conditions at some of its suppliers,” according to the reports.
It’s widely expected that Apple will launch a new iPhone with a larger screen made of sapphire. Normally speaking, Apple debuts its new iPhone each fall.
Besides iPhone, Apple has launched a new car-related service CarPlay, which allows iPhone users to make phone calls, listen to music and browse maps easily while driving.
