Apple scores US patent for Lujiazui store design

WITH its gleaming glass tower surrounded by water, spiral staircase and illuminated white Apple logo floating within a transparent cylinder, it is one of Shanghai's most recognizable stores.

Today the Apple shop in IFC shopping mall in Lujiazui was granted a design patent in the US, in a sign of the technology giant's unending desire to protect the originality of its designs.

The iPad maker is almost as famous for its quirky, ethereal buildings as for the design of its products. The Shanghai store, which opened in September 2010, bears a resemblance to its cube-like store on Fifth Avenue in New York.

The importance of the store architecture to the company is underscored by the presence in the filing of Steve Jobs, late founder of Apple, who is named in the patent along with former retail boss Ronald Johnson and architects David Andreini and Karl Backus.

Jobs was famously meticulous about detail, getting involved in the design of products at a minute level.
