Baidu鈥檚 app opens door to other apps
China’s largest search engine operator Baidu said it will allow users to access various applications through its own search app to make it easier for them.
Dozens of so-called applications such as online taxi booking and house rental service are now available through a beta version of Baidu’s search app for Android smartphones, and more services such as for music streaming and online restaurant booking will be available in the near future.
“The applications could serve as a complement to Baidu’s existing distribution channel and that gives developers an easier way to promote their work,” said Xiang Ligang, an independent IT commentator.
Baidu’s mobile search traffic has grown 16 times since 2010, Li Mingyuan, Baidu’s vice president and general manager of its cloud computing unit, said at the company’s annual technology innovation conference in Beijing yesterday.
As many as 69 million apps are downloaded through Baidu’s search app and its distribution site 91 Wireless each day. But Li added the number is still very small compared with tens of millions of users using Baidu for their searches everyday, Li added.
The company is trying to link search requests toward as many as a million independent apps, most of which are not easily found in official app stores such as Apple’s App Store and Google Play.
Last month, Baidu said it’s acquiring third party app store operator 91 Wireless for US$1.9 billion, a move industry watchers say could cement its position in the mobile sector.
Baidu’s mobile revenue exceeded 10 percent of its total income for the first time in the three months ended June, with most of that coming from advertising sales on its search app.
