Broadband speed set to rise by fourfolds
SHANGHAI is set to become the city boasting the fastest broadband network nationwide when it upgrades broadband speed for home use by fourfolds to 8 megabits per second (Mbps) next year, China Telecom said yesterday.
The telco will also provide free broadband service upgrade of up to 20Mbps speed to 4 million local broadband family users, the country's biggest fixed-line phone carrier said.
In 2011, Shanghai's average broadband speed will hit 8Mbps compared with 2Mbps now.
In 2013 users can access speeds of 32Mbps and 50Mbps in 2015, according to China Telecom's Shanghai branch.
"Shanghai has led the new industry from copper cable to fiber optic on broadband network," said James He, Shanghai Telecom's assistant general manager and marketing director.
"The upgraded network lowers broadband costs and help partners, including service providers and content providers, to develop more services and boost the whole telecommunications industry," He added.
Shanghai Telecom's new 20Mbps package costs 180 yuan (US$26.5) a month on average. Each Mbps costs 9 yuan, versus 50 yuan or more now.
Half of the bandwidth in the package will be used as "application bandwidth", for value-added services such as Internet Protocol TV.
For the free upgrade, Shanghai Telecom's users on the 2Mbps service will be upgraded to 4Mbps. Users on the 4Mbps or above service will be upgraded to 20Mbps.
It will also provide free WiFi services in 14 public places, including the two airports, Hongqiao high-speed railway station and cross-province bus stations.
