China Mobile to boost 3G coverage

CHINA Mobile aims to double its 3G network capacity usage to 20 percent by the end of next year, through a nationwide network upgrade and increased variety of 3G models, the world's No. 1 mobile carrier said yesterday.

China Mobile's 3G network coverage will be better than that of 2G in the nine major cities, including Shanghai, in 2011 because the carrier will upgrade its 3G network based on the China-developed TD-SCDMA (time division-synchronous code division multiple access) technology.

"We will develop the nine trial cities where 3G services are better than 2G services to attract more TD-SCDMA users," said Bian Yannan, China Mobile's vice director of planning division.

China Mobile plans to have a total of 300,000 3G base stations in China in 2011, compared with 220,000 now. The 3G network capacity usage is expected to hit 20 percent then from 10 percent now.

Compared with 2G network, 3G provides users with high-speed Internet access on phone. The 3G services, such as video call, mobile TV and film download, often bring mobile carriers higher profit margins than traditional voice services.

China Mobile now operates a 3G network based on TD-SCDMA, which is less commercially mature compared with WCDMA and CDMA 2000, adopted by smaller rivals China Unicom and China Telecom.

For example, TD-SCDMA industry lacks flagship handsets such as Apple's iPhone or Nokia's N8 for WCDMA.
