China Unicom teams up with three video websites to lower fees

CHINA Unicom announced today to cooperate with Tudou, PPTV and Sohu to offer affordable mobile video services in Shanghai.
The cooperation created a new income channel for Chinese online video websites which are still struggling to make profit. It also helps China Unicom, Apple's partner on iPhone, to expand its product portfolio to attract more high-end users, analysts said.
Each video channel of the three websites will charge users 10 yuan (US$1.5) for unlimited access each month, without other fees like mobile data cost. Comparatively, data cost for mobile video was previously up to several hundred yuan for frequent users.
Shanghai is the first and currently the only place to offer the service nationwide, which will be available later to other regions, according to Li Mingduo, China Telecom's vice general manager for new business division.
