China Unicom unveils cheaper 4G packages to take on China Mobile and China Telecom

CHINA Unicom aims to attract more 4G users in Shanghai with upgraded network, low entry-level package and a bigger variety of models, the country’s No. 2 mobile carrier said today.

China Unicom launched new 4G packages in Shanghai starting from 8 yuan for data traffic of 100 megabytes every month, only half of the cost of the entry-level packages with rivals China Mobile and China Telecom.

China had about 14 million 4G users nationwide by the end of June. The user base will grow rapidly thanks to lower prices and improved speed, said Qualcomm, the world’s biggest mobile chip designer.

China Unicom has upgraded network to 150 Mbps (megabyte per second) in downtown Shanghai, with 4,000 4G base stations in the city by June. It aims to build totally 6,000 stations by 2014.
