China sets out ambitious on 5G
CHINA is testing 5G networks in major cities including Shanghai and is expected to become the world’s biggest 5G network by 2025, industry officials said during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai opened today.
China will become the world’s biggest 5G market by 2025 after starting commercial adoption of 5G services around 2020. The 5G connections will hit 428 million in China by 2025, accounting for 39 percent of the world's total 5G connections, according to a report released by industry associations GSMA and CAICT.
The 5G applications in the initial stage include enhanced mobile broadband services, Internet of Things, super high definition video (4K and 8K video), VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality) services. The 5G networks, 20 to 50 times faster than current 4G networks, will greatly change automotive, transportation, finance, healthcare and other industries and boost economy in innovation-oriented way, industry officials said during MWC Shanghai, the world’s biggest telecommunications exhibition’s summer session.
China Mobile, the world’s biggest mobile carrier with more than 850 million users, is conducting 5G field test in five major cities including Shanghai. It plans to large-scale trail starting from 2018.
The major 5G investment will occur for seven years since 2018, which is expected to account for about 25 percent of the telecommunications carriers’ revenue, analysts said.
By March, China’s 4G mobile penetration rate reached 61 percent, five times compared with two years ago.
China Mobile has more than 583 million 4G users nationwide, which has expanded business scope on IoT and other new services besides data and voice business.
Ericsson, Qualcomm and China Unicom, have started cooperation on VoLTE over Internet of Things, which can be widely adopted in public and government sectors on fire control and road traffic monitoring.
