Chinese brands drive global sales
GLOBAL smartphone sales posted a record growth of over 10 percent in the third quarter as China-branded devices drove the expansion, a research firm said yesterday.
The smartphone sales totaled 350 million units worldwide in the July-September period, a 10.4 percent increase year on year and a record double-digit rise in mature markets this year, Trendforce said.
In China, smartphone sales hit 168 million units, up 18 percent year on year, said TrendForce, which called China’s brands the “growth engine” of the whole market.
The top-five brands in the domestic market were Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, Lenovo and Xiaomi, whose combined sales had surpassed those of the two global market leaders, Samsung and Apple, said Trendforce.
Samsung and Apple both saw their market shares fall 2 percentage points in the quarter.
