Chinese first lady draws praise for using domestic smartphone
Chinese first lady Peng Liyuan was found taking pictures with a China-brand smartphone during her European trip with President Xi Jinping, another move showing her support for goods made in China.
A picture of Peng snapping photos with a white mobile phone emerged on the Internet yesterday, creating a social media craze about the brand she was using. She had previously been photographed with an iPhone 5 during a trip to the US last year. Although only the back of the smartphone and no logo was visible in the photo, tech-savvy users identified Peng's phone as a Nubia Z5 mini made by ZTE Corp, a Shenzhen-listed firm and the world’s No. 5 smartphone maker.
ZTE said it was surprised and happy with the publicity, the company said.
“ZTE is proud of the camera features on the Nubia and we will invest heavily on improving image quality for the next-generation of Nubia models,” Zeng Xuezhong, ZTE’s executive vice president, said in a statement yesterday.
The Nubia phone costs less than 2,000 yuan (US$327), less than half of the iPhone 5 price.
Members of the online community were impressed by the first lady's support for Chinese brands.
She was also praised widely last year when she wore clothes designed by Wuyong during her debut on the international stage in the US.
