Chinese outspend Asia Pacific peers in dining out, survey shows
CHINESE consumers are more open to new technologies when they're dining outside, and they spend more on dining compared with their counterparts in other Asia Pacific regions, a study shows.
More than 80 percent of Chinese residents, including those in Hong Kong and Taiwan, used a credit card to pay their bills at high-end restaurants, higher than the 52 percent average level in Asia Pacific, according to a consumer-purchasing study by MasterCard, the global payment network operator.
Consumers in China's mainland spend an average of 1,014 yuan (US$163) each month on dining out, 16 percent higher the average level in Asia Pacific. They're also more avid users of online coupons and they tend to turn to the Internet to search for comments or look for credit card promotion deals more often than other Asia Pacific consumers.
The survey got responses from 7,932 people between 18 and 64 years old in 16 Asia Pacific countries and regions.
An earlier study by MasterCard showed that 59 percent of Chinese shoppers make purchases via mobile devices thanks to convenience and the ubiquity of smart phones.
