Chip and LCD sector stocked

THE LCD panel and chip sector is unlikely to face a supply shortage at least in the short term following the devastating earthquake in Japan, industry officials said yesterday.

But the situation will worsen if Japan's power supply and logistics can't recover after one month, they warned during the Shanghai International IT & Electronics Fair 2011 yesterday.

David Wang, president and CEO of Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp, sees the disaster to influence the industry over the long term.

SMIC, the biggest made-to-order chip maker on the Chinese mainland, imports key semiconductor materials and equipment from Japan, including photo-resister and wafer substrate. Wang said that SMIC has enough inventory and its production won't be hit greatly over the short term.

The LCD industry also won't be significantly affected by the earthquake because only two or three Japan-based fabrication plants were damaged, Daniel Lee, LG Display's marketing official, said during an interview at the fair which ends tomorrow.

LG Display is the world's No. 2 liquid crystal panel provider, behind South Korea's Samsung.

A senior official at Chimex Innolux said he has not heard "any news or talk about a price hike (after the earthquake). It's impossible in the LCD sector" and "no player and can raise the price easily."
