Diverse portfolio lifts Huawei’s revenue
HUAWEI Technologies’ revenue surged 40 percent in the first half of the year as the company leverages on its carrier, consumer and enterprise businesses and gains awareness and global market share.
China’s biggest telecommunications equipment maker posted a revenue of 245.5 billion yuan (US$36.8 billion) in the first six months, up from 175.6 billion yuan a year ago, it said yesterday. Its operating margin was 12 percent.
Huawei’s most shining portfolio is its consumer business, which has propelled the company to become the world’s No. 3 smartphone vendor. Huawei has now shifted gear to higher-end models and strongly competes with Samsung and Apple in the high-end market.
Global sales of smartphones hit 320 million units in the second quarter, with Huawei’s share of the market at 9.2 percent following Samsung with 24.5 percent and Apple’s 15.1 percent, said TrendForce, a Taiwan-based researcher.
Huawei’s carrier business is also set to receive a boost from 5G and Internet of Things, while demand for security and cloud computing has driven sales of its enterprise segment.
Separately, Huawei is embroiled in a long-standing patent dispute with Samsung. Last week, Samsung said it has sued Huawei for alleged patent violation, the latest spat in several disputes between them.
