Faster but cheaper with 4G Plus
CHINA’S leading mobile carriers unveiled 4G Plus plans that allow users in Shanghai to enjoy higher, but cheaper, Internet connection speed at the Shanghai Digital Information Fair yesterday.
China Mobile’s 4G Plus networks are located in the city’s downtown, including People’s Square and some areas in Jing’an and Changning districts. Its networks feature bandwidth of 300 megabytes per second — double the current 4G bandwidth level. The world’s biggest mobile carrier, with more than 5.5 million 4G users in Shanghai, will offer the 4G Plus network covering the whole Inner Ring Road area by the end of this year.
“The rich mobile applications and cloud services have boosted demand for advanced networks,” said Yuan Fang, Shanghai Mobile’s marketing director. “On the other hand, we offer users entry-level 4G monthly packages with more affordable prices starting from 38 yuan (US$6.12).”
China Telecom, the country’s third-largest mobile carrier, will test 4G Plus technology in Shanghai from next month, with peak bandwidth of 200 and 300Mbps, compared with 100Mbps now.
Apple’s iPhone models don’t support 4G Plus technology under China Mobile and China Telecom networks. But the next generation of the iPhone to be released in September will support the new technology, a China Telecom official said at its booth.
More than 20 brands, including Samsung, Xiaomi and Oppo, have unveiled models supporting 4G Plus.
China Unicom, the No. 2 mobile carrier, announced its Internet Plus strategy which will integrate Internet and other industries like auto, education and health care.
The fair is one of the events during the Shanghai Digital Information Festival.
