Game income close to US$15b for 1st time
CHINA’S game industry revenue surged over 20 percent to almost 100 billion yuan (US$14.5 billion) for the first time between January and June amid a booming mobile Internet development and cross-industry integration, industry officials told a Chinajoy forum yesterday.
In the firs six months, China’s game industry revenue hit 99.8 billion yuan, up 21.6 percent year-on-year or 10 times from a decade ago. Among the total revenue, mobile game revenue hit 56.1 billion yuan, up 49.8 percent year-on-year, said the 2017 Gaming Industry Report released yesterday.
By June, there were more than 507 million gamers in China, a 3.6 percent growth year on year, according to the report.
“Game is standing at the crossroad of art and technology. We are offering various products with culture and happiness feeling beyond entertainment only,” Ding Lei, chairman of chief executive of NetEase, told the forum.
With high quality games, China is exporting digital entertainment products to the overseas markets, said Robert Xiao, chief executive of the Perfect World, which has game business in more than 100 countries and regions.
In 2016, Shanghai’s game industry accounted for 35 percent of the national level.
Chinajoy, or the China Digital Entertainment Expo & Conference, will open to the public today and close on Sunday.
