HP says sorry to Chinese laptop owners
HEWLETT-PACKARD Inc apologized yesterday to Chinese laptop owners who have complained of deficiencies in quality, and the firm announced it would expand the warranty period and improve technical support services.
But United States-based HP stopped short of promising it would recall the laptops as their owners demanded.
The world's No. 1 personal computer vendor made the announcement yesterday, the International Day for Protecting Consumers' Right, after owners complained about the deficiencies in their HP laptops to China's quality watchdog.
"We sincerely apologize to Chinese consumers for inconvenience caused by our product and service problems," Isaiah Cheung, vice president and general manager, Personal Systems Group of HP China, said in a statement in Chinese on the company's Website.
The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said on Sunday that it had received complaints by 60 consumers against HP laptops for quality problems and started investigations, according to its Website.
The complaints centered on overheating, blurred or dark screen involving 40 models under the HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario brands.
HP users can check if their laptops are included in the new test and repair plan via a link listed in the statement.
More than 300 consumers of HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario laptops have signed on a joint complaint demanding a recall, Sohu.com quoted their lawyers as saying.
HP China also promised warranty extension for some of its clients on the mainland.
It said owners of the laptops which had the main board repaired were entitled to an additional two years of warranty from the day their laptops were repaired. In addition, owners of these laptops who claimed similar problems within 180 days from yesterday may get another two years of warranty from the day their products received HP's service, the statement said.
