Hello Moto! Motorola returns
MOTOROLA Mobility, owned by Lenovo Group, made its return to China with three new smartphone models yesterday as it aims to compete with Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi.
All the new Motorola phones to be sold in China will feature “simple and best” Android experiences.
Moto X, with a 5.2-inch screen and voice control features, started online pre-orders yesterday through websites like JD.com and Tmall.com. Customers can pre-order the entry-level Moto G, priced from 1,299 yuan, in February. The flagship model Moto X Pro with 6-inch super high-quality screen and 13-megapixel camera will start retailing online in March, Motorola said yesterday in Beijing.
Motorola’s relaunch in China will help Lenovo grab market shares in the high-end segment and compete with Xiaomi and Huawei, industry insiders said.
Motorola was absent from the domestic market after Lenovo announced in January that it would spend US$2.9 billion to acquire Motorola Mobility from Google, the developer of the Android system.
Motorola also launched Moto Hint wireless earbud headphones in China yesterday. The country is the first in Asia to get the Moto Maker Service that lets users buy customized items for their phones.
Lenovo expects to return Motorola to profitability within four to six quarters.
