Help for online video firms

YOUKU Tudou Inc, China’s biggest online video website, yesterday said it will invest 10 billion yuan (US$1.6 billion) on content development and support independent video producers over the next three years.

Chairman and Chief Executive Victor Koo told a press conference that the company will help 100,000 independent content providers to set up their own video channels.

“We’ll play a better role in connecting viewers with content providers and introduce more independent video producers,” he said.

The company said also that it has invested in five independent video content producers.

Online video sites, squeezed by the rising costs of acquiring exclusive broadcasting rights to popular television shows and movies, are shifting toward self-produced reality shows, talk shows and other forms of original content.
