Honoring MNCs as city innovators
SHANGHAI is promoting entrepreneurship and innovation during a week of activities that will culminate in recognizing multinational companies which have helped the city toward its goal of a technological hub.
The Week of Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation, which was launched yesterday and runs till Friday, includes events that promote related supportive policies, fairs that showcase the latest progress of some innovative firms, as well as honoring entrepreneurs and inventors.
A ceremony to reward multinational companies which made contributions to help Shanghai’s ambition to become a global technology innovation center will be held on Thursday. The award scheme, launched by Shanghai Daily and online news provider Eastday.com, has selected 40 winning MNCs in recognition of their promotion of innovation in the city.
Mayor Yang Xiong, who attended the opening ceremony yesterday, urged successful businessmen to be mentors for young companies.
A new fund was also set up to support university students who want to start their own businesses.
Shanghai unveiled supportive policies in May and has relaxed market access and simplified the business licenses application process for startups as it drives toward becoming a global technology innovation center by 2020.
Shanghai was one of eight cities chosen to be the co-hosts of the week, along with Beijing, Shenzhen, Xi’an, Chengdu, Wuhan, Shenyang and Hefei.
China adopted mass entrepreneurship and innovation as a national strategy in March when Premier Li Keqiang said: “Mass entrepreneurship and innovation in itself is a major reform endeavor.”
