Innovation expertise gets a big boost

SHANGHAI expects the China (Shanghai) International Technology Fair to spur China’s innovation ability and help the city boost technology trading.

The three-day fair, opened yesterday at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center, has drawn nearly 927 exhibitors from around 25 countries and regions and “is the first national exhibition specializing in technology trading, which has contributed to the city’s economic upgrading,” said Mayor Ying Yong.

Shanghai “has unique advantages to hold the fair” because it is home to over 60 universities and colleges and more than 200 research institutions, said Fang Aiqing, vice minister of commerce.

The technology fair has “helped universities and startups to cooperate every year and adapt patents for key strategic industries,” said Zhang Yi, an official at the Shanghai Education Commission.

China’s technology trading deals totaled more than 1.1 trillion yuan last year, said Li Meng, vice minister of science and technology.
