Latest iPhone a sellout in HK

APPLE'S latest mobile phone, the iPhone 4S, sold out in just one morning in Hong Kong yesterday.

The Apple store started selling the phone at 7am, and announced it was sold out at 11:30am.

Some scalpers began reselling the phones immediately after leaving the shop.

One scalper told sina.com that he could get HK$6,300 (US$807) for an iPhone 4S - HK$1,200 more than the retail price.

Close to 100 police officers and mall security guards were on duty from early morning in anticipation of the rush.

With stocks gone, at 11:30am the Apple shop closed, its staff seen cheering and applauding inside.

The store reopened after a few minutes, with a board placed outside stating, "order today, get stock tomorrow."

However, sina.com reported that the Apple shop in Hong Kong still had stocks of the iPhone 4S.

"But those are for people who have pre-ordered their phones," a shop assistant was quoted by sina as saying.

Having queued for four days, an 18-year-old, surnamed Tse, was the first customer to get the iPhone 4S.

He bought five phones for HK$25,000 and planned to resell them all, China News Service reported.

The phone is expected to go on sale on the Chinese mainland in December.
