Lenovo unveils smart TVs

LENOVO Group Ltd officially debuted smart TVs in Bejing yesterday, a huge step for China's biggest personal computer maker to expand business outside its personal computer core.

Lenovo's four smart TV models feature Google's Android 4.0 operating system and interactive content from Shanghai Media Group. It represented the latest trend in the convergence of the mobile phone, computer and TV sectors.

"The debut of smart TV marks Lenovo's new PC Plus strategy," Lenovo's chairman Yang Yuanqing said in an e-mail statement. "We will provide content and service across various devices from handsets and tablets to computers and TVs."

Lenovo previously launched the smart phone LePhone and tablet computer LePad, which also adopts the Android system.

Apple Inc also plans to launch its own TV to better integrate with the iPhone and iPad, industry sources said.

Starting this month, Lenovo will start selling TVs in nine cities including Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, Suzhou and Hangzhou.

The price for Lenovo's TVs ranges from 6,499 yuan (US$1,031) to 14,999 yuan for 42-inch and 55-inch models.
