Lenovo's Q2 net profit rises 30%

LENOVO Group Ltd, the world's No. 2 personal-computer maker, said today that it posted a 30 percent net profit growth year on year in the second quarter and expanded its market share to catch up with the world's leader Hewlett-Packard.

Beijing-based Lenovo had previously expected to surpass HP to become the world's No. 1 PC maker by the end of this year.

Net profit jumped to US$141.4 million in the three months ended June 30, from US$108.8 million a year earlier, thanks to the booming overseas sales and mobile Internet business, Lenovo said. Revenue rose 35 percent to US$8.01 billion in the quarter.

By the end of second quarter, Lenovo's market share reached 15 percent, close to HP's 15.7 percent, according to International Data Corp or IDC.

In the three months, Lenovo's sales in the overseas markets including Asia Pacific, Latin America and Europe jumped 60 percent year-on-year on average. Meanwhile, it expanded into the mobile phone and TV market.
