Localized features in next iOS system
CHINESE consumers will enjoy localized optimization features in Apple’s next-generation operating system for its iPhones in the autumn, the company said yesterday.
The next-generation iOS 11 for the iPhone and iPad will include features like Chinese-English translation on Siri, Shanghai dialect dictation and phone number identification as Apple ID, the technology giant revealed at its Worldwide Developers’ Conference in California on Monday.
The move is seen to woo Chinese consumers and boost Apple China revenue, which fell in recent quarters amid challenges from domestic smartphone makers like Huawei and Oppo, industry insiders said.
“It’s not the first time specific features for China have been mentioned at Apple’s global conferences,” Jia Mo, a Shanghai-based analyst of research firm Canalys, said.
“Apple aims to localize optimization to boost sales in the fiercely-competitive Chinese market,” he said.
But market observers wonder if Apple is relatively “slow” to unveil these features as they have already been developed and adopted by domestic companies including Tencent, 360 and Xiaomi. For example, WeChat and Alibaba’s Alipay have supported QR scanning for several years.
For the first time, Apple also said it will support virtual reality and argument reality platforms for developers on its Mac computers in the next generation operating system.
