Microsoft hopes for approval on Xbox

MICROSOFT Corp hopes to get approval from a Chinese regulator to begin selling the Xbox video game console on the Chinese mainland, a top Microsoft China official said yesterday during a game forum.

The Xbox is manufactured on the mainland and it contributes US$4 billion to exports annually, according to Zhang Yaqin, Microsoft's corporate vice president who leads research work in China.

"We hope to launch Xbox as soon as possible but it all depends on the government," Zhang said.

It's an issue related to "several government bureaus" and there's no timetable for a launch at present, Zhang told Shanghai Daily during the China Digital Entertainment Summit Forum.

Other video game consoles such as Sony's PS3 and Nintendo's Wii, are also not available in China.

But the consoles are popular in the grey market.

More than 40 million Xbox units have been sold overseas, according to Zhang.

Meanwhile, Microsoft plans to launch Kinect, which provides a controller-free experience, later this year.
