Mobile searches climb during Olympics

MORE Chinese people are using smartphones and tablets to search for incredible sporting feats and news about celebrities, according to recent reports from Google and Adobe.

Mobile search volume jumped in Asia during the Olympics, especially in Japan, South Korea and China. Fourteen percent of mobile searches in China are related to the ongoing Olympics, Google said yesterday.

"It's clear that these are the first multi-screen Olympics as users are engaging across TVs, computers, smartphones and tablets, often at the same time," said Google in a statement yesterday.

"We have seen large spikes in global mobile search volume during recent major sporting events, like the Super Bowl and the Olympics," Google said.

Searches related to the Olympics on mobile devices - smartphones and tablets - grew 10 times during the first week of the sporting event from the previous week, according to Google.

In China, about 21 percent of people use mobile search compared with 14 percent on computers, according to a survey by Adobe.

By the end of the first half, the Chinese mobile Internet user base surpassed that of computer users for the first time, according to the China Internet Network Information Center.

Baidu lead in mobile search with a 59 percent market share followed by Google with 34 percent, according to Adobe.

The popularity of smartphones with the Google-developed Android system boosted the market share of Google in the country, industry insiders said.
