New telegraph poles to serve as 4G base stations
SHANGHAI will set up telegraph poles which will serve as base stations and information service providers by the end of this year, Shanghai’s top information technology regulator announced at a conference yesterday.
The base stations will serve both 4G networks and will display information through touch-screens — all part of the Smart City project, Li Yaoxin, chairman of the Shanghai Commission of Economy and Information Technology Development, said.
The commission is teaming up with China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom on the project. The new poles is expected to ease people’s concerns about radio emission from base stations in residential communities.
“We have developed prototype poles which will be displayed at the China International Industrial Fair (in Shanghai) in November,” Li told Shanghai Daily.
“We will start putting them up after the fair.”
The three carriers are building thousands of new 4G base stations in Shanghai but they often face protests from residents worried about radio emission.
Li said another part of the Smart City project involves an investment of 7 billion yuan (US$1.1 billion) in rural regions on IT infrastructure by 2015.
The conference was held to promote Global City Informatization Forum 2014 in November, which is co-organized by the United Nations, the Shanghai government and the commission. The forum will hold talks on urban management, industrial upgrade and intelligent applications.
