Nokia, Xiaomi sign patents-sharing deal
NOKIA and Xiaomi yesterday said they had signed a multi-year patent agreement to boost Xiaomi’s global expansion.
The agreement includes cross-licensing to each company’s cellular standards patents. Xiaomi also acquires patent assets from Nokia.
The companies also agreed to explore opportunities with the Internet of Things, augmented reality and virtual reality and artificial intelligence.
In 2015, Ericsson sued Xiaomi in India, saying its phones infringed on Ericsson’s wireless technology and that the firm had refused to discuss license fees for years.
The agreement with Nokia, the former top smartphone vendor with rich patent pools, will help Xiaomi expand globally.
With a presence in more than 30 countries and regions, Xiaomi is “building sustainable, long-term partnerships with global technology leaders,” said Lei Jun, chairman and CEO.
