Nokia to lay off 1,700 people worldwide
NOKIA Corp. says it will lay off 1,700 people worldwide at several units to cut costs, as the global economic downturn continues to plague the mobile phone sector.
Nokia spokeswoman Arja Suominen says the world's largest cell phone maker needs to reduce personnel in several sectors, including devices and markets units, the corporate development office and global support functions.
Nokia says it plans to begin talks with employees soon. A timeframe and closer details would be announced later.
Tuesday's announcement follows earlier plans by Nokia to make savings with voluntary resignations from up to 1,000 workers in a global program open to employees until May 31.
