Online shopping gaining fast popularity
E-COMMERCE continued to pick up as a strong channel for consumer goods sales in the second quarter, the latest report by market researcher Kantar Worldpanel shows.
Consumer e-commerce spending surged 36 percent and made up of 10.1 percent of the total fast moving consumer goods market as the traditional mid-year sales event on June 18 lifted online sales.
Hypermarkets showed sluggish performance, with the penetration rate falling 1.3 percentage points while supermarkets reported 2.7 percent revenue growth.
SunArt Retail, which operates RT Mart and Auchan, remains market leader with an 8.2 percent share. Wal-Mart’s market share climbed to 5.7 percent thanks to its partnership with JD.com’s on-demand delivery platform JD Daojia helping it reach a wider customer base.
Yonghui Superstores offered new retail formats and strengthened its digital presence, increasing its share of the market to 3.7 percent from 3.2 percent a year earlier.
The mid-year “618 shopping festival” has become one of the most important online shopping occasions and JD successfully raised its penetration rate with warm-up events from early June.
