PPTV eyes broadcasting sports in VR
PPTV aims to tap the demand for online sports programs by broadcasting high-quality soccer matches in virtual reality, the online video giant said yesterday in Shanghai.
“Online sports is a gold mine in China where consumers are willing to pay for unique content,” said Yin Yuan, PPTV’s vice president.
The sports content, covering Spanish Primera Liga matches and English Premier League on PPTV, has attracted “several million” viewers. The firm will use its expertise in big data analysis to recommend viewers favorite content, games and online shopping service.
PPTV paid 250 million euros (US$283 million) to get the broadcasting rights to the Spanish Primera Liga for five years in China until 2020.
“China is vital for us. Along with Spain, it’s our most important market and that’s why we’ve got a specific strategy in place,” Spanish Primera Liga president Javier Tebas said in Shanghai yesterday.
The latest virtual reality technology will be first adopted in boxing and tennis so that audiences can enjoy new angles to watch matches.
