PPTV invests in drama and sports content

INTERNET video firm PPTV plans to invest 5 billion yuan (US$784 million) to expand content embracing self-produced dramas and sports, the Shanghai-based firm said yesterday.

PPTV will spend the amount to offer 25 popular Internet dramas, 150 US and Korean dramas, 400 new movies online, more than 20 entertainment shows and unique sports content to its 400 million users, said Jian Xianheng, PPTV’s vice president.

“PPTV has unique advantages in the booming Internet video market, like a whole ecosystem covering content, TV, handset and channels,” said Lily Zou, co-president of iResearch.

The revenue of the Chinese Internet video market is set to hit 36.8 billion yuan this year, a surge of 50.2 percent year on year. Users are spending more time on Internet video services, said iResearch.

PPTV, which has an investment of US$2.5 billion from Suning, appointed Zhang Xun, who was a sports TV host of Shanghai Media Group, as vice president.

PPTV said earlier that it would sell 1 million smart TVs within one year since its TV models debuted in June. It has unveiled a smartphone that supports 3D display. It offers 300 3D movies and 100 3D games online.
