Pace slows in electronics exports

GROWTH in China's exports of electronics dropped in the second quarter due to decreasing demand in Western countries, China's top industry and information technology regulator said yesterday on its website.

In May, electronics exports increased 8.2 percent from a year ago, down 8.9 percentage points from April and 9.5 percentage points compared to March, the ministry said.

"Export growth continued to decrease in April and May, mainly in materials, telecommunications devices and home appliances," the ministry said in a statement.

In the first five months, electronics exports grew 17 percent to US$248 billion, up 17 percent from a year earlier.

In May, China exported electronics worth US$9.6 billion to the United States, down 3.3 percent from a year ago. China exported US$2.3 billion, a 14.7 percent plunge year on year, in electronics to Germany in the period.

The regulator also said China's third-generation user base had reached 73.8 million by the end of May with 43 percent of those using China-developed 3G technologies.
