Qualcomm sues Meizu for not paying fee

QUALCOMM Inc is suing Alibaba-invested smartphone maker Meizu in China for non-payment of a patent license fee under a new format following an anti-monopoly probe, the world’s biggest mobile chip designer said yesterday.
Qualcomm has filed the complaint against Meizu in the Beijing Intellectual Property Court, which requests the Chinese company to pay the patent license fee to comply with China’s Anti-Monopoly Law and licensing obligations.
The related patents include 3G and 4G wireless communications technologies, said Qualcomm.
Meizu, which sold more than 20 million smartphones in 2015 after Alibaba’s investment, declined to comment on the issue yesterday.
Qualcomm has signed with over 100 Chinese smartphone brands, including Xiaomi and Lenovo, on new patent fee agreements after it was fined 6.09 billion yuan (US$919 million) by the National Development and Reform Commission following an anti-monopoly investigation in 2015.
Top Chinese phone makers, including Huawei and Meizu, all used Qualcomm chips in their high-end models.
