Sales of cell phones up 57% to over 246m

MORE than 246 million units of mobile phones were sold on the Chinese mainland last year, an annual growth of 57 percent, due to the popularity of 3G services and smartphones such as iPhones and Android models, a Beijing-based research firm said yesterday.

The domestic market will continue to expand in 2011 because of a greater variety of smartphones and cheaper 3G services, Analysys International said in a report. The iPhone and handsets using the Google-developed Android system are becoming popular among the Chinese due to several factors, including the huge number of mobile applications, Analysys said.

In 2009, 157 million units of mobile phones were sold and this helped China become the biggest cell phone market worldwide, the report said.

"A 3G phone wave, including iPhone 4 and Android phones, boosted demand for phone replacement and new phone purchases," Analysys said.

At the end of last year, there were more than 800 million mobile phone users and 40 million of them subscribed to 3G services, according to the country's three telcos.

China Mobile, the world's biggest telco by users, had 584 million users, including 20.70 million 3G users, by the end of December. There were 14.06 million 3G users for China Unicom. China Telecom was said to have 12.29 million 3G users.

China Unicom, Apple's sole partner for the iPhone on the mainland, may attract 30 million new 3G users this year, according to China International Capital Corp.
