Samsung to launch readers

SAMSUNG, the leading maker of phones and TVs for the United States market, is launching e-book readers this year.

There will be two models, with 6-inch and 10-inch "electronic ink" screens, at US$399 and US$699. They'll be able to download public-domain books from Google Inc via Wi-Fi, and will come with styluses so users can write on the screen.

Samsung Electronics Co, meanwhile, yesterday predicted an operating profit of up to US$3.44 billion for the fourth quarter of 2009 after its first loss a year earlier.

The Suwon, South Korea-based corporation expects consolidated operating profit of between 3.5 trillion won and 3.9 trillion won (US$3.44 billion) for the three months ended December 31.

The company reported a consolidated operating loss of 740 billion won in the same period last year. The loss came amid a fall in consumer demand in the global economic slump.

Samsung began issuing earnings estimates from the second quarter of 2009 to help minimize market speculation and increase corporate transparency.
