GOOGLE plans to invest at least US$200 million to build its first three data centers in Asia as it expands its infrastructure to keep pace with the region's burgeoning Internet use.
The Internet search giant has bought land in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore for the data centers, which are typically secure facilities packed with thousands of computers that store and serve vast amounts of data.
It aims to finish construction in one to two years, but has given no specific start dates. The Taiwan and Hong Kong data centers are expected to cost US$100 million each, including the cost of land. There is no figure for the one in Singapore.
