Shanghai is slowest in broadband speed
CHINA'S Internet speed is much lower than the world average and Shanghai is the place with the slowest speed nationwide, an industry report said today.
In 2010, China's Internet speed averaged 100.9 kilobits per second (kb/s), less than half of the world's level of 230.4 kb/s. Henan Province ranked the No. 1 with a speed of 131.2 kb/s while Shanghai ranked the last with a speed of 73.9 kb/s, said the report published by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC).
The report, based on a survey of 60,000 people nationwide, showed Henan, Hunan and Hebei provinces were the top three in Internet speed while Shanghai, Jiangsu and Tibet were the last three. Beijing was in the 13th place.
Experts said Internet speed is decided by various factors such as network infrastructure, network quality, client base and device type. It is difficult to tell why Shanghai's Internet speed is lagging behind other provinces.
China Telecom, the country's major broadband service provider with more than 3 million clients in Shanghai, declined to comment today.
Earlier the company said it was upgrading its bandwidth for home users by fourfold to 8 megabits per second. After the upgrade at the end of 2012, Shanghai will have the fastest broadband connections in the country.
