Shanghai residents spend most via Alibaba’s payment platform
SHANGHAI residents topped consumers from all over the country in terms of per capita payment through Alibaba's payment affiliate Alipay this year, latest figures from the payment firm show.
The average amount of payment made by Shanghai residents was 38,561 yuan (US$6,220) in the first 10 months this year, followed by residents in Beijing, Zhejiang and Guangdong provinces.
Shanghai's total amount of payment made through Alipay accounted for 9.3 percent for China's overall payment during the 10 years since the payment service was first launched in 2004.
Coastal cities and regions made up the bulk of payment through the Internet payment platform, with leaders including Guangdong and Zhejiang provinces.
More than half of the number of payments handled by Alipay had been made through mobile devices as of the end of October this year, according to figures released by Alipay.
The adoption of mobile payment was much stronger in inland cities and regions, with Tibet, Shanxi, Ningxia and Gansu ranking the top positions in terms of total number of mobile payment.
A total of 66 provincial level cities reported per-capita payment size of more than 20,000 yuan in the first 10 months this year.
Alipay's cash management product Yu'e Bao has attracted 149 million users since it was launched in June last year.
