Sony aims to release 100 Blu-ray movie titles

SONY aims to release a total of 100 Blu-ray film titles in China by the end of this year compared with the 60 titles now, the electronics firm said yesterday.

But movie buffs hoping to buy the Blu-ray titles cheaply are in for a disappointment as Sony won't cut the price of Blu-ray films in China, said Tim Meade, vice president of Sony Pictures China.

"We believe the legitimate Blu-ray will be accepted here. People won't care about the price of the disc if they have spent 100,000 yuan (US$14,705), 300,000 yuan or even more on a home theater system," he said.

Sony Pictures' Blu-ray movies will be priced at less than 200 yuan. The Blu-ray standard allows for almost six times more data storage than on a DVD. The name Blu-ray derives from the blue laser used to read the disc.

Sony Pictures will launch "Final Fantasy VII: The Advent Children," in China in June, which will feature three Dolby TrueHD soundtracks in English, Japanese and French.

The Blu-ray next-generation video technology offers high-definition image and theater-level sound.

Dolby's TrueHD technology supports eight audio channels and is fully compatible with Blu-ray's high-definition image, a senior executive at Dolby China said.
