Sony set to launch tablet PCs
SONY Corp will launch a new tablet computer by the end of this year after facing pressure posed by other makers of the product, the Japan-based consumer electronics giant said yesterday.
To boost VAIO-branded laptop sales in China, Sony plans to expand the distribution channel and launch new products featuring strong entertainment functions such as BlueRay and 3D technologies, said Chen Ning, the firm's marketing director of laptop business in China, in Shanghai.
Sony said, without providing more details, that it will unveil a tablet PC by the end of 2011. Sony faced challenges posed by Apple's iPad tablet computer in the 10.1-inch and 11.6-inch netbook segment of the computer market. Apple sold 15 million iPads since the device debuted two years ago.
Sony may be new to tablet computer but in 2010 its PC sales in China grew 75 percent annually, triple the industry's average growth level, said Chen who cited data from research firm IDC.
