Stepping into global top-10 list
THREE Chinese firms, two on the mainland and one from Hong Kong, have been listed as among the top 10 handset vendors globally due to growing market demand in Asia, a United States-based research firm said yesterday.
By the end of the first quarter, Shenzhen-based ZTE Corp ranked No. 8, followed by Hong Kong-based G-Five at No. 9, which was ranked in the top 10 for the first time. Another Shenzhen-based firm, Huawei Technologies, ranked No. 10, according to Gartner Inc.
The combined market shares of the top five mobile handset manufacturers -- Nokia, Samsung, LG, Research in Motion and Sony Ericsson -- dropped from 73.3 percent in the first quarter of 2009 to 70.7 percent in the same period of this year, according to Gartner.
ZTE, which expects its mobile phone revenue to grow an annual 35 percent this year, raised its market share by 0.4 percentage point from a year ago to 1.7 percent.
The number of mobile phone subscribers on Chinese mainland will reach 840 million by 2010 before rising to more than 1 billion in 2012, according to Informa, a Switzerland-based research firm.
The new 3G applications and network upgrading will encourage users to replace phones in China, said Charles Moon, an analyst at Informa.
Mobile phone sales globally were 314.7 million units in the first quarter of 2010, an on-year rise of 17 percent, Gartner said. "Growth in the mobile devices market was driven by double-digit rise in smartphone sales, helped by wider product availability and mass market pricing," said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner.
