Taobao Mall kicks out fake watch dealer

TAOBAO Mall, the country's largest B2C online retailer, has blacklisted a Guangdong dealer for selling 1,500 counterfeit watches worth about 900,000 yuan (US$141,300).

Taoyi Watch Store held a sales promotion of imported Casio watches at 599 yuan each, about 70 percent lower than the original price, the News Express reported today.

Customers grew suspicious when they found their mail parcels had a bad smell. The user manual was poorly printed, and the watch lacked some functions as advertised by Casio.

One customer, Wang Hui, had his watch examined by an official Casio dealer in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province and it was proven to be a fake, the report said.

Unlike other e-commerce websites, Taobao Mall authenticates each registered retailer and consumers believed in Taoyi Watch Store. The 1,500 watches were snapped up in a few hours. "I chuckled to myself because I got it! What a big bargain!" Wang told the newspaper.

The accused watch store, one of Taobao's earliest clients, enjoyed a high reputation before its scam came to light. It became the first business shut down by Taobao Mall, according to a source at Taobao.

Taobao promised to provide cash compensation double the price buyers paid for the fake watch, Taobao Mall's public relation manager Yan Qiao said.
